What To Look For - Signs Present in Early Meth Use

What to look for...

Not sure if someone you know is using crystal meth? It may not be easy but here are some general signs that may help. A note of caution: some of these behaviors can be the result of other causes besides meth use. Just because someone you know may exhibit these behaviors does not necessarily mean they are using meth. Many people can use crystal meth and not show any signs of use, or hide them very well. If the person you know has exhibited many of these behaviors or conditions, it is likely they are using meth, especially if they are increasing in severity and frequency.

Common signs present in early crystal meth use:

• Crystal meth paraphernalia including razor blades, glass pipes, small plastic baggies, plastic "bullets" used for snorting, syringes, heated spoons, surgical tubing, mirrors and straws.

• Grinding teeth

• Boundless energy

• Sexually charged and displaying intense sexual desire

• No appetite

• Weigh loss

• Sweating and dehydration

• Sensitivity to noise

• Mood swings, irritability, dizziness or confusion

• Impaired sexual functioning, including inability to get and keep an erection (also known as "crystal dick") and delayed ejaculation

• Failure to return calls, make and keep plans consistently, or disappears for days at a time

• Hiding out….social isolation from family and long-time friends

• Missing work

• Little or no sleep for multiple days (especially during weekends with circuit parties, Pride events or festivals/street fairs).
